WeeBIKE-Hasyun Racing wins again at the Keith Berger Memorial Criterium. Our team did a good job of containing the field for the best possible scenario- a Field Sprint! Ralf, Adam, Kyle then Matt took turns accelerating on the final lap and took the win from a big strong field.

Our breakaway expert Adam Sternfield was torched after taking his turn in the leadout and didn't even bother to cross the finish. David 'Solobreak' Foley was delayed with two to go when a huge pileup occurred on turn two. He trashed a wheel, but kept all of his skin. An early break looked promising when it contained a few of the favorites, but others were not content to let them roll away and in spite of some good blocking by Horst Benidorm and WeeBIKE-Hasyun, the break was reeled in at about halfway. Kudos to Matt and Ralf for taking some cash and merch primes as well. Ralf and Murat also entered the Pro race a couple of hours later. 45 additional laps sounded like fun but serious cramping with 15 to go took Murat out of contention. Ralf did a good job of hanging tough and finished.

Hello racing fans! It's been an interesting (albeit confusing) year of transition for M1 Racing. We ended a relationship with a title sponsor and when the money ran out, a bunch of us migrated over to Team Racemenu/mix1, which unfortunately left a bunch of riders twisting in the wind. This is not something I'm pleased with and hopefully we will make this right in the upcoming cross season and 2011 and beyond. The good news is that some new sponsors are in place as well as some old ones. The bad news is that this will require some new apparel, which is always expensive. We will be sticking with Pactimo though, the extra cost is worth it. Now the question is going to be: who is left on M1 Racing? and will anyone new be joining us? I'm not exactly sure how to answer the first question, and the 2nd question is ABSOLUTELY. Let this serve as our official announcement that we will be aggressively recruiting road racers to our team in the coming weeks. All are encouraged to inquire, regardless of category, men and women, juniors and masters. M1 Racing is going to be populated with a large cross section of New England racers in 2011. The old M1 Racing uniforms have a quotation on the back of the collar, by a Pulitzer prize winner whose work opened my eyes to some things, during a period when my father was in chemo, radiation, fighting lung cancer.

I'm saddened to report to you that Franz himself announced that he has been diagnosed with lung cancer this past week. He's a distant FB friend to me and he does not know that an elite New England bike race team has ridden tens of 1000s of miles carrying his words and his name: "We are created by being destroyed" -Franz Wright "The Letter"

Tour de New York is Coming!

My good friend Todd Scheske is in the news again. Between being a promoter of races such as the Rochester Twilight Criterium and the Tour de New York and being President of the very prestigious Genesee Valley Cycling Club, Todd helps me to train effectively and to time my peaks correctly. Today’s news article at VeloNews is pretty exciting, and if I’m not mistaken, the Tour de New York will also feature a downtown criterium for women, juniors and masters, with the Pro crit being the Feature Presentation of course. That’s another excuse for me to head out there and spend some time with my younger brother, who is finishing up his degree at Rochester Institute of Technology. As a team affiliated with the GVCC, maybe we can head out there as a Team and kick some tail!

2009 Boston Mayor's Cup Pro-Am Redux

RaceMenu/MIX 1 Racing lined up at the start of this epic late season "criterium royale". From the six of us, three survived to see the finish: Alain Ferry (39th) , Adam Sternfield (67th) and Matt Kressy (64th). Here are a few pictures which I just found at the official event website. For me the race was too fast - I had some very serious lower back problems all August long and had to stop riding. My form went kaput and some desperation training in September was not fruitful. I'd like to underscore the fact that this was a Pro-Am criterium, populated by not less than 25 pro riders, out of the 100+ entrants. Official results indicate that quite a few middle aged hard men had the mojo to race with pros who are 1/2 of their age. Adam Sternfield (pictured below) and Matt Kressy (above) set a great example to follow for young guns like Alain and I..

I was on the rivet for the whole entire time, and it took some coaxing and encouragement from a good team mate, but in the end, I found myself in the top ten going into the correct inside line of the corkscrew with 1/2 lap to go. There was a crash in the final corner- on the outside. This was both a curse and a blessing- it required me to shift my weight to the right at high speed and reach for the brakes, losing a touch of speed. On the other hand, it delayed a few guys enough for me to hold onto 9th place with lots of room to spare, or so it seemed. Hopefully the results this year will show a high speed shot of the top 15 as they showed in last year's results. Needless to say, it pleases me immensely that Matt Kressy won, that three of our team populate the top ten finishers, and that all five of our team raced honorably and finished.

Masters TT Nationals in Turkey

I was 11th in the start list of 38 in the 10k Masters Nationals TT here in Bartin, Turkey.. After finishing my flat and very windy 10k in 14:43, I was in 1st place for a time. This false sense of achievement continued for another 1/2 hour as other riders continued to depart and return in 2 minute intervals. Then the last 10 guys on their tricked-out TT bikes took start. I didn't even have a skinsuit. My only aero advantage was arm warmers and booties. Anyhow.. After much nail biting and wishful thinking, I was beat.. First by a few seconds, then 10, then 20.. And I was eventually relegated to 7th.. Only 20 seconds separated the top 7 at this point- the only ones who beat me were the aero bars and deep dish carbon wheels and disks. Until the very last starter rolled up- he could not be more than 120 pounds soaking wet- but he demoralized everyone with a time of 13:34.. Full aero everything- So my cannibal time got me 8th out of 38. If I had a way to cheat 20 seconds using some aero gear, I would have populated the podium. I guess I'm pleased to be top 10 in a TT for the first time ever, but a set of clip on aero bars would have been nice! Redemption tomorrow in the road race!!! Thanks for reading.

2009 Tour of Somerville Pro Race Report

As told by the recent winner of the Sunapee Road Race:
Folks,

Just a note to let you know what happened at Somerville. In case you have not heard, the most notable result is that Alain got caught up in a crash with 2 laps to go and broke some ribs. Prior to the crash he was looking strong! It would be great if everybody could send him some love...

The race was super fast. On the front straight we would be between 30-33mph every lap. On the back stretch, we were doing 29-32. The style of riding was very aggressive. Guys would pass you and as soon as their hip passed your bars they would come across your wheel. This would force you to hit the brakes to avoid touching wheels. I must have hit the brakes 20 times a lap. It got to the point where I wouldn't even stop pedaling while braking. It was crazy, and stupid, and exciting. One thing to note is that the smoothest classiest riders were New Englanders like Jonathan Page and Robbie King.

Eventually, I started getting wise and made it my mission to stay on the inside of the field and would move out into passing riders. Alain and I had very good position throughout the race and I was really feeling great. I was in an early break. Alain got a prime. We'll have to wait for his report on this as I did not see it. With about 6 laps to go, Alain came by me so I could grab his wheel. We then started moving up to the front. We would get up there and then 20 guys would swarm up the outside and then we would have to start again. Eventually we got separated and then the crash happened (this was the second or third one). At this point I had no idea that Alain was in the crash, so I was looking around for him, but with 2 laps to go, I started looking for the United train. Didn't matter, I had hit the wall and when I stood up to go I had nothing. FYI, I was spinning 53x11 and really needed another gear! Quite an experience...

Another WIN: 2009 Cyclonauts Criterium 35+

Forgive me for including only the results of my events. Millwork One Racing had a very good day in the 35+ race at Stafford Springs. I raced as aggressively as the legs would go, and considering my goal of being in the top ten, I'm pleased with my form and my result. The field sprint played out the way we wanted it to- Alain was up the road shutting down and passing the two breakaway riders with two to go (these two were originally accompanied by our Adam). Matt and Patrick R were on Alain's heels with one lap to go, fighting for 3rd and 4th, and the field followed by a few seconds in the sprint for 5th. I got the "D" spot, as this race paid only 6 places.. A decent result for me- one which gives my confidence a nice boost.
The Pro race was a blur- the laps went flying by so fast that I was often surprised when the card seemed to go from 30 to 20 in a matter of minutes. Again I raced aggressively, I mean, relative to staying near the front as much as possible. This race had an early break with Matt in there, a chase groups with Alain in there, and another chase group with Adam S in there. These three groups totaled 14 guys and they eventually got together and lapped the field. Just before they caught us from behind, a field prime was announced. Your hero was patient- he waited until the field was completely through the chicane and onto the fast back straight to attack. It was not a mind blowing acceleration- but enough that all but one was caught off guard. I buried myself into the curve, clocking some major speed and apparently dragging someone along for the ride. I cant turn around and check- I'm forced to assume that someone is there in stealth mode, waiting for me to sit up so they can steal my thunder. So I just pin it.. and get out of the saddle for the last 50 meters. This afforded me a chance to take a peek and sure enough there he is, all out sprinting a few bike lengths back. I take the prime and look back- the field is still rounding the bend. My passenger gives me kind words for sticking it and I'm happily $10 richer, with completely dead legs. The field went flying past me and it took some very deep digging to get back up to speed and tag myself back into the field, but I did it, no worries. One lap later, the break catches us. Final sprint was a bit chaotic, and technically, it would have been better if no one sprinted except for the leaders, but there's pride at stake I guess and most everyone tried to get their nose up there. I was so gassed by this time, but happy to have the legs to make my mark in both races. Sadly, my Ergomo was out of juice for some reason (it has been draining completely on me whenever I leave it on the bike overnight, I just discovered), so I have maybe 20 minutes of data from the 1st race.
I'm proud of my team for delivering the Win and the multiple top ten results today. In the 35+ race, we were the only team with more than one guy in the top 10.. in fact we had 3 of us in the top 7! I'm very happy with this little statistic.
I would also like to salute Alain and Matt for being the kind of guys who make the rest of the team perform at a higher level. Best of luck to them on Monday at the Tour of Somerville. With Matt Kressy's upgrade to Category One this week, we now have two Millwork One Racers in the Pro race. Thanks for reading.

2009 Blue Hills Classic 35+

Many of you missed a good race Sunday! I lined up in the 35 race with Joe, Kyle, Adam, Matt, and Alain. This race was ours to lose! Unfortunately we lost our star sprinter when Matt's chain broke on the hill of lap 3. Kyle stayed back to offer help him to reconnect with the field, but we were screaming around the course at too high a speed for two guys to TT back.. After being lapped they jumped back in to try and help Alain score a win, but the some expressed disapproval of this tactic. Joe accompanied me in the shelter of the field for many laps, making me feel less isolated and more comfortable on the hill, where I was very nervous about getting gapped or worse. I didn't see Joe on lap 5 or 6- hope he's okay. This left Alain, myself and Adam for the uphill finish finale. The last kilometer was an all out drag race. I started my hill sprint too early, and would have had top 10 if the finish was 100 meters sooner. We each emptied our respective tanks and the chips fell where you see us on the results: teens, 20s and 30s. Excuses? Adam had a race in his legs from Sat. Alain had cramping issues on the final lap. Me, I had confidence issues relative to last weekend and the 2008 Blue Hills, where I was brutally shelled. It was a good day of racing in ideal weather. Nice work guys.

M1 Racing made the start line in CT and MA these past two weekends. We put Mike, Bill and Lynn into the men's masters crit at Plainville on Saturday March 7th. For a report of the day's action, please check out this blog entry.

On Sunday March 15th M1 Racing also populated the Wells Ave Criterium season opener. It was a beautiful day for racing and attendance reflected this. We had Mike, Bill, Brendan, Ralf, Kyle, Adam, Matt and Murat (me) in there. In what turned out to be a faster than usual first-crit-of-the-year (both at Wells and for most of the field) M1 had two riders hit the deck due to the poor bike handling of others. All of the team rotated at the front throughout the race and helped to contain and shut down a dangerous break. The halfway prime was neutralized due to traffic and in the final sprint, high anxiety from the prior crashes made people very tentative or very aggressive. Millwork One was able to get a rider into the top five, but not without taking some serious chances if kissing the asphalt. Here is a race report from one of the pros who was with us in the 'A' race.

The more recent Wells Ave No 2 was very nicely reported by a friend of M1 Racing and can be found here. It isn't apparent to me if we cracked the top 6 (I was not there) but it sounds like we did make a big team effort to be up there at the very end.

M1 Racing is growing

Our budget for fuel is the same in 2009 as it was in 2008. This means that with gas prices under $2 (instead of over $3) we can afford to support some more racers. Reach out to me if you are interested using reiscotools@yahoo.com. There are some requirements for those of you who want to be considered for the "A" team. If you are as fanatical about training and racing as I am, it's obviously a big plus.
M1 Racing are also in the process of developing a package of benefits for prospective members of our new "B" team. This program is going to be an attractive way for new racers to be in an environment which nurtures, develops and teaches the things which can't be found in any book about bike racing. It's also a smart way to shoe-horn yourself into a pretty darn good New England team, one that is attached to one of the finest racing clubs in the country, the Genesee Valley Cycling Club.

The Specialized has landed

Millwork One Racing supports a masters bike racer overseas- Murat Akyazi- a fellow I rode with last May and who won me over as a dedicated, competitive and talented force on the road. We support Murat by supplying him with all of his racing apparel, tires, and tubes. Most recently we sent him a "new-to-you" race bike. This was a sensitive project to undertake. Shipping a bike to Turkey is not a laughing matter- in fact it should be avoided due to the unpredictable way in which Customs Taxes are assessed and collected. Bottom line- mailing a race bike is costly enough (about $250 via UPS) and paying the taxes on it when it arrives make it even more cost prohibitive.

First things first- we needed to find a bike for Murat. Lucky for us, a fellow racer in New Hampshire had something available which he sold to us for a fair price- a properly maintained Specialized Tarmac full carbon bike that had normal wear and tear. Matt S graciously accepted my first offer for the bike and I paid him for it on Paypal and a couple of weeks later we met at a mutually convenient location up in Greater Boston for delivery. That was the easy part! By this time, Murat had already seen digital pictures of the bike and he wired me the exact amount of money that I paid for it.

Next we needed to find a person with plans for traveling to Turkey in the near future, who would be willing to take the bike and check it as their own baggage. A message to a couple of Yahoo groups netted us such a participant, but not without offering a small fee of $50 for the favor. Worth every penny- we were also ready to pay any surcharge which the airline might impose at check-in. Our courier was all set up after only one e-mail and one phone call. I offered to drive him to Logan airport on that day to make sure everything went smoothly. This was all set.

The next challenge was packing the bike! Providence Bike pitched in and supplied us with a nice heavy duty carton to package the bike, which is greatly appreciated. It took a couple of tries, but after about 2 hours of trial and error, we managed to squeeze the bike into the box, properly protected every way that we knew how.. We took photos in case of any loss or damage claims..

The following morning, I picked up our courier and we headed up to Logan to catch his flight. Good friend that he is, he refused the $50 that we advertised, but when I insisted, he promised to accept it from Murat in Istanbul, who would be meeting him at the arrivals gate to get his bike. He just wanted to be sure it wasn't coming out of my pocket. Luckily, our friend traveled light, and so the airline refrained from charging us any extra money for the bike box. This was a relief to me, but it was especially a relief to Murat in Turkey, who was ready to pay it if necessary.

Now the bad news.. our courier was back-tracking to Chicago to catch his flight to Istanbul, meaning that the bike box would need to be rushed from one plane and into another, probably in a limited time span. Needless to say, the savings of checking the bike box came with certain bad luck, and the bike never made it onto the Turkish Airlines flight. It was lost for about 5 days before I managed to dial the correct number in Chicago and speak with the correct person, who found the bike within 12 hours and promptly notified me. Our team mate Murat, who took a day trip by high speed ferry to Istanbul to get his bike, met with our courier (who missed his connection to Ankara) and ended up paying him the $50 even though the bike was lost. A deal's a deal.. Murat took a long trip home after that, empty handed.

In the end though, Turkish Airlines made everything right- they put the bike on the next flight to Istanbul and they shipped it direct to Murat's house in Bursa using a delivery service. No added cost, no customs fee, no damage to the bike, and a huge relief to everyone who added to the effort. This was primarily an investment of time for Millwork One Racing- one which made it possible for a masters racer in Turkey to afford a high quality bike that is otherwise very cost prohibitive and out of reach for most people over there.

Millwork One Racing has had a very successful first year in 2008 and we expect to continue adding to our impressive list of results in 2009. The team roster has grown a little bit! Rick Gervais now wears the M1 colors and so will Bill Doonan come January 1st. We also have a couple of other prospects in the hopper who might be persuaded to jump aboard. Let's see what happens. One thing we can promise to everyone is a bigger and stronger M1 Racing Team in 2009.

Race Report: New England Velo Cross Challenge

Lynn, Wild Bill, Lyons, Judge (we call him jay now, it just fits better) myself, left for The New England Velo-Cross Challenge in NH at 5:ish this am. We were among the first to arrive, which gave us a chance to pre-ride the course. Lynn had a real good warm up and a good feeling about the course. She got a very good start, the second woman into the woods, quickly picking off the lead rider. She held on for a few strong laps, but, alas one rider got by. She place second in her first cyclocross race of the year!My race was next, I got the holeshot into the woods, only to fall while trying to ride up the first run up. Lost 5 places during my momentary loss of judgment. The next laps were spent fighting for spots. With three to go I was in second place and could see the leader. I fought hard in the power sections but I could not reel him in. I finished second with a severe case of lung burn.Wild Bill? He's racing Sucker Brook tomorrow, so he took it easy on the competion, no reason to show all your cards this early in the season.

Race Report: 2008 Three Village Tour RR and YMCA Rose Pedal Criterium Pro-Am

Saweeeeeeeet!! Nice job [Matt]! That [Portsmouth] race is a real barn-burner, isn't it?!! I love how you come out of that 4th corner every lap single file in a line of 80 guys at supersonic speed. Reading your report of a field sprint finish, though, comfirms that I made the right decision to go down to Norwich...BTW was Skip okay after his crash? My brief weekend race report goes like this: Did the 45+ Three Village RR on Sat. The promoter combined the 35s, 45s, and 55s- even though he had substantial fields in each. Said he didn'thave "enough resources". Anyway, on the last lap a break of about 15 guys including myself, Bill Y, Ciaran, Dave Potter, and Mark Gunsulas got away. Coming into the sprint, I made a major mental error that I'm still kicking myself for. I said to myself, "Damn, here's another big break where I'm gonna get 11 or 12th and come away with nothing". Sure enough, I did finish 12th, but I completely forgot about the fact that we were seperate races, so technically I wasn't sprinting against Bill and Ciaran, I was sprinting against Mark G. and the other 45s. If I had remembered that, I definitelywould have fought for better position on Mark's wheel (he won). And the funny thing was, all of us 45s (there were 4 in the break) sucked in the sprint- we finished 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th! Not saying I would've won by any means, but I honestly think I cost myself at least one spot (and a podium). Well, live and learn- mental errors can be just as costly as poor physical preparation....
Sunday in Norwich was hard. Very tough race. Short laps with a steep hill and no chance to rest/recover. Break of 4 got away (inc. Tim Unkert) then a chase group of 4 (inc. Amos Brumble). Late in the raceI bolted and Bill Y bridged up. We hung on for 9th and 10th (me). So, overall, not a bad weekend. I was hoping for maybe a little bit better, but I surely can't complain...Weather permitting, I'm gonna try for one more race: Next Sunday at Ninigret.

Race Report: 2008 Portsmouth Criterium Pro-Am

Well boyz, I had probably the best race of my season yesterday. It went something like this...
Was warming up and got a flat. Was on my Zipps with tubies, so I was screwed. Rode the flat 3 miles back to the car and started begging for a front wheel because I did not bring an extra. Skip was parked right next to me, so I asked him and he was actually quite concerned and tried to help me out. Finally Bill Mark from NBX/Narragansett rode by me with a pair of Carbones, he gave me a front wheel with a nice Conti Sprinter tubie on it. I was happy.
The race started and it took about 5 laps for me to finish my warm up. I was in the last quarter of the field and started moving up. The course was tight (how I like them) with corners that if you have a good line, you can make it really difficult for those behind you. Finally got up to the front and stayed there the rest of the race. It was a CCB and Metlife affair. Many attacks from them followed by some excellent blocking. So I spent a lot of energy bridging when I thought the prospects were good for the break to stick. And that’s how I found myself to be in a break of 5 guys at lap 20 and the first prime was announced. At this point I figured that the break would be caught, so I gave up on that and focused on the prime. Just before the 3rd corner (the trickiest corner on the back stretch) I attacked, ripped through the corner, accelerated to the 4th corner. At this point, no one was near me, so I half-sprinted to the line (about .18 miles) to get it.
The break fell apart after that, so back to the field. More of the same, attacks, blocking, bridging, single file. Another prime is announced. Again, I am at the front (like in 5th), so I figure “what the hell”. This time I can’t get free on the back stretch, so I wait until we come around the 4th corner. Went right from the apex for a straight up sprint. Got the prime. Back to the field.
Skip starts getting active and is attacking constantly, as are some IF/CCB/MetLife guys and an occasional attack by Robbie King. Skip gets away (like 200 feet up the road) with 2 other guys. He stays out there 2 laps and they ring the bell. Prime number 3. There is no chance for me, and besides I am looking to recover for the finish. Skip is looking very strong and like he is going to get it, but his foot pulls out and he crashes. I find out later that his cleat pulled off his shoe.
So finally, with 5 laps to go, the field is all together. I am doing my best to stay at the front, but like so many of these “Pro” races the pace is so slow that riders are swamping me up the sides. So my 5th position turns into 25th. I am forced to put a lot of energy into bumping and elbowing and listening to pre-pubescent riders whine and cry, but eventually get and stay up there. With 1 to go, it got easier when the pace climbed above 30 (thank god!). Came into the last corner on Ward Solar’s wheel (who was on Robbie King’s wheel). Ward snaked though some traffic, which I got hung up on and settled for 4th.
So, for me, a very satisfying day and conclusion to the 2008 season. I won 2 out of the 3 primes and snagged 4th. Was active and aggressive and walked away with some cash. Now I will paint my house.

7th place at Ninigret: Murat gets close..

It was a very fast night at Ninigret Park in Charlestown, with lots of the local favorites racing in the Wednesday night criterium. To wit, 6 of the the top 10 Rhode Island masters were there, and so were 4 of the top 50 ranked masters in the country. Speed was up by one mile an hour (27 mph average) over last week, and the field was strung out single file on most every lap. No one could get away though, and the final field sprint was a knife fight among the few who had the reserves to accelerate and the nerves to find openings to pass through!

Yesterday our Adam Sternfield put 'Millwork One' on everyone's lips when he won the 45+ criterium race up in Loudon NH. To add to his victory, he also scored 3rd place in the 35+ event which followed. All this was done on his own, with no team mates around to help him get the two podiums.Today featured the annual Blount Seafoods Fall River Criterium. Again, Adam Sternfield delivered- he got into the winning breakaway of the 45+ event and took another solid result- 5th place. The 35+ race followed right afterwards and Adam lined up alongside Matt Kressy and myself to do his part for the team. After about 10 of 20 laps on the challenging one mile course, Tobi Schultz escaped solo and not long after, Millwork One's Matt Kressy was able to attack and bridge up to him. A few laps later, Mark McCormack attacked and bridged across to join the duo. Now all that Adam and I had to do was slow down the field as much as possible using blocking tactics, and hope that Matt can outsprint both Tobi and Mark in the finish. We discovered afterward that these two guys worked Matt over- attacked him, forced him to waste energy (all the things we'd have done if we were in their shoes) In the end, Matt sprinted to an honorable 2nd place, beating Mark but not Tobi. Back in the main field, the race exploded on the final lap up the climb and I chewed through my handlebars to get 8th in the field sprint, 11th overall. A great weekend of racing for Millwork One. The race announcer called us out dozens of times, making Millwork One a familiar name for all of the spectators. Podium pictures coming up soon. Thanks for reading.

New Millwork One Team Member: Murat Akyazi

Millwork One Racing is now 'International' in the true sense of the word. Meet Murat Akyazi- 33 year old Master, training and racing in Bursa, Turkey. While I was there this spring, I rode with many people. But in terms of being impressed with riding ability, character, kindness and class, Murat outshined everyone else. The M1 Racing kit he's using replaces the tattered one he'd been using for years. My sister will be flying over in a couple of weeks, and she's taking a special care package over there for me. Some good tires, tubes, arm warmers, rain jacket, etc etc.. If we're going to support a rider we may as well do it properly, or not at all! Take note of the absolutely pristine-condition Peugeot frameset. Welcome aboard, Murat!

Week 12 Results: Lake Sunapee Bike Race and Wells

Millwork One strikes again! With only Adam Sternfield at his side and all other Millworkers on holiday, Matt Kressy easily demoralized the field at Lake Sunapee and earned a solid fifth place only 30 seconds behind the four breakaways. In Adam's own words, the report goes like this:

Sunapee recap: Two things stand out- Mike Spangenberg's performance and Matt Kressy's acceleration. First off, Mike Spangenberg probably rode the single most dominating master's race I never saw . By that I mean he and Leo Devellian attacked literally from the gun, and while we caught Leo halfway through the first lap, Mike didn't resurface on the pack's radar until just a couple of miles from the line. He damn near soloed the entire race! And this on a quad-rending course and a day where the wind was kicking up surf-able waves on the Lake. Even when he was finally reeled in by a strong Ciaran Mangan and 2 others, he still came within a bike length of taking the sprint. Phenomenal.Which brings me to Matt. With Ciaran and Mike's group of four 30 seconds up the road vying for the win, the remainder of the field came to the final climb strung out behind Tom Francis' wheel. For those of you who don't know the finish, it starts with a shallow pitch, followed by a couple hundred meters of flat, then a 300 meter grinder (or hoagie, if you prefer) to the line. When we hit the flat, Matt bolted like his proctologist had just whispered "time for your rectal exam, Mr. Kressy" in his ear. I mean he opened up a hundred yard gap before anyone could blink. He had time to look back, twice, complete his 2008 1040A with schedule C, and cruised in. He didn't just outsprint the field, he demoralized it. Me, I had a strange race. For roughly 35 of the 46 miles, I felt like 1990's version of myself. The version that could climb without a triple chainring and didn't consume a significant portion of his calories in the form of a distilled malt beverage. A much less gravity-affected version. I found myself going over climbs with the likes of Bill Yabroudy and Ray Johnson and was even on one occasion off the front with those two. Then, suddenly, on one of the rollers approaching the finish, the lights went out and I was dropped. Can't explain it, don't want to, prefer instead to hang onto the ego-inflating memories of the first 35 miles. In any case, I ended with a small group and we managed to latch on just in time to be blown back in the wake of Matt's supersonic turbulence :-)

Sunday's Wells Ave was both well attended and held under bright and sunny skies. We even had an under 25 Slipstream-Chipotle racer in field. Everyone was doing a double take. In what seems to have been a case of dejavu.. Adam once again chooses the right wheels after the halfway sprint and rolls away from the field as part of the 8 man break which sticks it out to the end. Meanwhile back in the main field, Brendan and Murat did their level best to get as much training benefit from this race as possible. Brendan could be seen pulling the entire field along on some laps, while Murat was drilling it on others to close gaps to the bridging attempts. Adam places 6th in a "sprint" that looks more like an uphill finish, while Brendan and Murat safely cross the line in the top 20 of finishers. A good day of racing indeed.

Murat streaks across the gaps at top speed. Nosebleeds were had by all who tried to follow his wheel. We can't help but think that everyone else's team kit looks a little bit inferior..

With the best results and the most wins of any other Millwork One racer, Lynn Samartano has the rest of her team, and Providence Bicycle and Millwork One, beaming with pride. How does one become the runaway leader of the Root 66 Race Series? Ask LYNN! After three events of the series, shen has amassed triple the points of every other contender, and could probably skip the next few races in the series and still wear the leader's jersey.. but we'd prefer that she continues to pad her lead! The racing in central Mass this past weekend was fast and furious. Fields were very large and very stacked with talent all around.. so much so that Matt Kressy lamented after the 35+ event that "a 10th place here is bigger than a win at Myles Standish".. and of course at this point he had not yet discovered that he did indeed make it into the top ten. Some fine riding by our team is really putting Millwork One Racing and WeeBIKE.com on the map! Nice work everyone!

Weeks 4, 5 and 6: Wells Ave and Charge Pond

The weekend of March 22-23: Wells Ave was attended by Brendan and Murat. A 12 person break motored away early and lapped the field! This frustrated a large number of folks who were snoozing at the back when 'the move' happened. Such is bike racing.
The weekend of March 29-30: Wells Ave again! Joe, Mike and Murat did the A race- not so well attended this time due to the Michael Schott Memorial race going on same day.. This time, a six person break escaped and was kept in sight of the field until the very end. Lots of blocking by a couple of teams proved effective though, and the break stayed away. Third in the field sprint for Murat was no consolation after so much hard work chasing!
We had others who ventured to the Charge Pond racing on both Saturdays. Please visit the blogs of Scott and Brendan for more information on those events.
The weekend of April 5-6 featured more training race action up at Wells Ave. Apparently the field swelled in size this week, making it a little bit easier for Mike, Brendan, Scott and Joe to take shelter in the field from the damp wet coldness. A field sprint this time! Nothing got away.

Mike, Scott and Brendan ventured up to the season opener of Wells Avenue Crit in Newton Mass and good times were had by all. Good clean racing, no crashes, and decent weather. Week 2: M1 Racing covers Bethel & Ninigret

It's week TWO of the 2008 road season.. and Millwork One Racing attended the same two events with the same four participants. One small difference: Murat turned his attention from Bethel to Ninigret and accompanied Brendan in a very high powered field on a notoriously windy day on the airstrip. Gusts of 40 or so miles per hour made it a requirement to get out of the saddle in order to break 15 miles per hour.. Brendan and Murat have both covered their respective experiences on Sunday. Michael and Scotty have also given us some reporting which will fill in the blanks.. Long story short, Millwork One Racing scored a couple of top 10 finishes at Ninigret this weekend. Next on the M1 radar: Wells Avenue Criterium in Newton Mass. M1 Racing will put all it's eggs in one basket this Sunday.. Stay tuned for reporting from Week 3!

Week One: Four Races, One Top Ten

M1 Racing's Scott Sullivan has made his mark upon the March 2nd Ronde de Bethel Criterium in Bethel, CT by taking a 10th place finish in the very well attended Cat 3/4 event. Michael Samartano raced in the 40+ and earned himself a respectable 19th place. Murat tested the legs in the Pro-Am event and proved convincingly that his legs are over due for a solid week of rest. Brendan Hanrahan was a participant in the year's first Ninigret Criterium in Charlestown, RI and finished in the main field, which was lapped by a pair of riders which included Adam Sullivan.
The Bethel Series continues this weekend and M1 Racing will be there again thanks to Michael and Scott while others will race at Ninigret Park on Sunday. Stay tuned.

You will be eligible for prize matching (This means that if you finish "in the money" and receive a cash prize, the team will match it and pay you an equal amount)

You will be required to become a member of the Genesee Valley Cycling Club, centered in Rochester, New York. (Millwork One Racing is one of the many affiliate teams of the GVCC, which is also the club that takes credit for the ROCHESTER TWILIGHT CRITERIUM!!!!! this year it's an omnium for the Pro-Am, August 8-10)

Team kits are completely laid out- I finalized the finishing touches earlier today and tomorrow the artwork files are being transmitted to Pactimo for production! We are bringing in enough apparel to cover about 8 riders with about three kits each (full zip jersey and bib short), and one each of the different jackets, skinsuits, leg warmers, arm warmers etc. Some of it is already spoken for, but some of it isn't. While Pactimo prepares their own mock-up for final release to production, we still have time to make final selections of sizes and quantities.. This means that if you are interested in representing Millwork One Racing for 2008, it' imperative to make it known to us ASAP and to attend our orientation and group ride at 8:00 AM this Saturday the 12th. If we have a meeting of the minds at that time, an apparel order will be taken for you so that you get the garments you want, in the correct sizes. Why wait and make it into a crap shoot? This is what a skinsuit would look like when arm and leg warmers are used. The actual jersey and bib short combo would be slightly different, mostly at the back pockets where there would be some shifting of logos and at the back panel of the bib shorts, which is shaped different from the skinsuit shown here. The long sleeve jerseys and the jackets which are being ordered would be very close to the top half of the kit you see here. It's hard to see but the "M1" logo is patterned into the fabric.

Orientation + Training Day: Saturday January 12

Millwork One Racing would like to reach out to the New England bike racing community by offering a meeting at the West Warwick home of Murat Altinbasak. This will be an ideal opportunity to meet the team's manager and find out more about the team's sponsorships, racing schedule and goals for 2008/2009. We will be gathering for some fresh bagels, donuts and hot coffee at 8:00 am and departing for a group training ride at 9:00. Depending upon the weather, our route will meander through Coventry RI and return us to the house 60-90 minutes later. We can then get warmed up inside, change into dry clothing, top off with more coffee/tea and talk some more about what direction to take.

Attendance at this event does not constitute unconditional acceptance onto the team, but your attendance will surely be more meaningful to us than if you pass it up.

It has been announced on NEBRA that M1 Racing is a masters team, but we would like to express that we're also very interested in attracting some younger cat 2s, 3s, women and juniors to the Team.

I am meeting with them today on my lunch break to finalize the details of their contributions to the team. Maybe this afternoon I will be able to announce it as a done deal... which will be nice.. one less thing to worry about.. then we can get on with the business of finalizing the apparel design and ordering all of the clothing. We're aiming for arrival of our order during the first week of March. Don't anyone belly ache that there isn't enough of your size! You have until the end of this week to specify what you want, if you join the team of course.. Otherwise, I will rely upon my good judgment to bring in the right mix of apparel sizes in the correct quantities.

Of course by "DONE" I mean that we have enough sponsors to cover our team apparel quite completely with graphics. Sure it would be nice to add a supplement sponsor, a wheel sponsor, a frame sponsor, an eyewear sponsor, a butt cream sponsor et al ad nauseaum.. but why even go there unless they're giving it away for free?.. and if you can snag a lot of that stuff on Ebay for the same price or even less than the "pro deal", why bother wasting kit space? It appears that a very reputable bike shop is interested in sponsoring us.. The Millwork One Racing Team will be in good hands and members will have access to bikes and parts at very favorable prices.. not to mention "front of the line" service for pre-race repairs and adjustments.. Personally, I don't think we can ask for more.
In other news, four New England racers have written to me expressing interest in joining our team. I can't say that I have ever heard of any of them.. but there are a great many who can say the same thing about me. It means nothing, really. I get the feeling that our roster will be full long before we take on our first race in March of 2008. This team is coming together quite nicely. If and when final commitments are made with these riders, we'll be sure to introduce them to you, one at a time.. Thanks for reading..

More Sponsors added!

We have added four cash sponsors and one equipment sponsor in this past week! Without naming names:

- one is a solid surface fabricator (Corian countertops)

- one is a custom veneer and panel product company

- another is a lumber and custom wood moulding company

- and one is a large distributor of plastic laminate, plywood and cabinet hardware

It appears that Millwork One is going to be co-sponsored primarily with partners in the woodworking industry. We're all very excited.. The names of these companies will be announced after our final apparel order is released for production next week.

Also: we've made a tentative agreement with a Rhode Island bicycle shop, the final details of which should be firmed up on Monday. Announcement of the shop's name will have to wait until then!

M1 Racing: What's the DEAL?

For those who qualify:
-Minimum of one FREE team kit (purchase of other team clothing not required, but definitely encouraged).
-All race entry fees for a list of pre-selected team events, paid in full FOR you.
-All gasoline cost for race travel reimbursed in CASH.
-On a discretionary basis, prize monies will be MATCHED dollar for dollar in the event of any exceptional race results.
Of course, restrictions and limitations apply, but we still believe this to be one of the most attractive plans any racer will find in the New England area.. Interested? Clothing is being ordered next week. Wouldn't it be good to get the apparel you really want, in the size which fits?

The Blizzard of 2007: A New Beginning!

Here marks the first post of the newly formed Millwork One Racing Team's blog.. Lots of exciting developments and new sponsors are coming on board, all to be announced.. Here's an early depiction of the look of our team kits, below. It's very close to it's final look, but there are more sponsors to be added! When a reputable company such as Millwork One is involved, lots of other companies suddenly also want to become involved!
